Research Student, Geotechnical Engineering · Kyushu University

I model things, build things, and check whether they hold up.

About

01 / About

I'm Abinael, an Indonesian engineer-in-training living in Fukuoka since 2022.

I'm a research student in Prof. Hazarika Hemanta's Geo-Disaster Prevention Global Labat Kyushu University, where I also serve as lab student leader. I'm studying geomechanics and the geotechnical methods that keep infrastructure standing through earthquakes. When the M7.1 Kumamoto earthquake struck in July 2026, my professor went out to investigate the sections of expressway that had subsided. That's the kind of work I'm here to learn, and Indonesia sits on the same Ring of Fire.

Before that, my degree project (B.Sc., School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, 2026, supervised by Prof. Hazarika Hemanta and Prof. Hironobu Kan) asked how Indonesia's 36 m² “Type 36” house could get close to net-zero on a homeowner's budget. The answer turned out to be roof and wall insulation that pays for itself in about a year.

I've also spent three years teaching: as a TA for Prof. Jan Brezina's Math for ISI, for Prof. Hazarika's Geotechnical Disaster Prevention and Sustainability course, and in the Faculty of Science's English conversation programme.

I like building as much as modelling: Status Maxx, a fintech app I coded myself; an offline AI assistant running on a local LLM; and the other experiments below. Outside the lab I work in HR at J-PRO NET Cooperative, placing Indonesian and Filipino workers with Japanese companies, and I help manage my family's investments back home.

I work in Japanese, Bahasa Indonesia and English.

I taught my AI assistant to run trading experiments 24/7 — change one variable, backtest, compare scores, keep or revert. Here's how the system works and what it's learned so far.
